The early autumn weather has been really lovely. On our lunch out at the Crown and Anquor , Dell Quay, we sat by the open windows, looking out across the water as the tide came slowly in. The staff there always make us feel most welcome.

Last session we were celebrating Autumn, starting with reading John Keats beautiful poem, Ode to Autumn’, with a group reading - each taking just one line. Next we tried writing our own poems, or tributes to this magical season, celebrating the colours, the sounds, the smells even, and how the changing light, and cooler evenings changed animal behaviour, and our own behaviour.  It was hard work getting going, but we enjoyed the challenge, and those brave enough, read out their work - and very moving it was too.

Our next few sessions will revert to our more usual menu, quizzes, games and of course, time to chat and relax.

The Bosham Monday Club opened its doors again on Monday 8th September, and members were very pleased to be back. Our first session got off to a rumbustuous start with a visit from the Selsey Molls who entertained us with some sea shanties and folk songs - some sad, some a bit risque, some very amusing. They accompanied themselves with a just a banjo or sang  a-cappella. It was a very enjoyable afternoon.
 
Our programme this term will include our usual mix of games, quizzes, crafts, talks and outings. Our aim is to be a social club for older people living independently in and around Bosham, to meet up, socialise and have some fun together. At our meeting on 9 June we had a really inspirational talk from two beekeepers from the Chichester Bee Keepers. They came fully equipped with beehives containing the waxed nest hexagonals,  including a skep, which is the old fashioned basket type beehive, with beekeepers suits and with wonderfully detailed videos of bees in action. We all learnt so much about the life of bees, how they organise themselves and work together - some lessons there for us humans. We are all now totally in awe and admiration  of these creatures.

We also learnt about the threat of the yellow legged Asian hornet, how destructive it is of our top pollinators, and how to recognise them and what to do if we ever see one. (See photos). Thankfully there have only been a few sightings of them so far in the Uk, but climate change is encouraging them and they have no natural predator  here.

The club is now winding down through the summer weeks with a number of outings planned - we are hoping to be sitting out in some warm summer sunshine. Our last session this term will be on Monday 21st July and we open up again on 8th September.

Our Spring Term ended with making Easter gardens - it gave a real touch of Spring, arranging chicks, lambs, spring flowers and greenery - and of course a few chocolate eggs. We then took our Easter break - a bit extended this year because of how the Easter bank holidays worked out.

Back for the Summer, we now have started on our SummerTerm programme, starting with some musical entertainment from Shirley, and then our usual activities such as Race Day and board games, but interspersed with a couple of talks - one on swimming the channel and another of the life of bees. Towards the end of the term we have a number of tea outings and visits to local schools.

A reminder that the Monday Club does not meet on Bank Holidays, and there are a few of those to navigate around at the beginning of this term.

It is hard to believe that we are over halfway through this terms programme, with only four sessions left before our Easter break. We have just enjoyed another afternoon at the races (very popular) followed by a session of Body and Brain exercises (perhaps not quite so popular, but good for us). We will then be listening to members choices of Desert Island Discs, followed by a lunch outing and finally Easter Crafts, when we will be making our Easter Gardens.

A number of new members joined us at the beginning of this term, and are now regular members. If you are an older person living in the community of Bosham or the surrounding area you would be most welcome. Our aim is to provide an enjoyable afternoon, where we can meet friends over a cup of tea and cake, and we also aim to provide an interesting programme of activities. Yes, the Bosham Monday Club is a club for older people, but it is not often that we get to celebrate a 100th birthday for one of our members. 

Sam has been a member of the club for many years, and has always had a twinkle in his eye and a great sense of humour. For example, when asked what activity he would like the club to organise - his answer was ‘pheasant shooting’.

We were able to celebrate Sam’s birthday at the Community Tea Party organised annually at Oakwood school.

The afternoon starts with some musical performances by their mini orchestra, and their ukulele band playing as we arrive and settle in.  The Year 6’s then served us with sandwiches, cakes and tea, and also have time to talk with us. While we enjoy our tea the younger students entertaineded us with songs, starting with the Nursery Year, and we were treated to renditions of ‘The Sun Has Got His Hat On’, ‘Sing a Rainbow’ and ‘Here comes the  Sun’ - sung in hope as the rain came down! Years 1 and 2 gave us ‘Aurora’ from Sleeping Beauty, the ‘Jousting Song’ and finally ‘Summer Holiday’.

Sam had his Birthday cake, with candles, presented to him and the whole school and all the guests sang Happy Birthday. We could not have had a more splendid setting to celebrate with him, and he really enjoyed it. 

The club is closed now during August to give us volunteers a break,  and we will open again on Monday 9th September. One of the special occasions on the Monday Club programme in the Summer is to have tea down on Bosham Hoe. We are very lucky to be hosted by the Chair of the Trustees of the Monday Club Charity , and enjoy her peaceful and beautiful garden, and to gaze out across the water of Chichester Harbour. But this year, on the appointed Monday , we awoke to a very chilly, rainy morning with a cold easterly wind blowing. Could we go ahead with an outdoor tea party on an exposed Harbour side? We had no plan B, and decided to go ahead, and gathered up blankets and umbrellas. But we needn’t have worried. By the time the afternoon came, the clouds had gone and the sun was out. What we needed were sun hats and sun cream. It was a really enjoyable afternoon.

The Monday Club enjoyed a trip to Billy’s on the Beach at Bracklesham at the end of April - we had chosen our Monday well as it was a warm , sunny day - and there weren’t many of those in April!  The lunch was good and we were made to feel very welcome. Members were able to have a stroll along the beach and to look at the sea.

We have a number of trips planned for the rest of our summer meetings, interspersed with our usual menu of games, music, quizzes etc.
But the emphasis of the club is on the word ‘social’ - it is a time to meet up with friends, make new friends, chat, laugh and relax.

Easter is now behind us and our photos show our members decorating the wooden eggs , our craft activity to celebrate Easter.  The Hall was hushed, like an exam hall, as members worked away and produced some  beautiful eggs.

The Club opened our doors again after the Easter break on Monday 15th April. Members were pleased to meet up again  and the first session was  a chance to chat with friends while playing table games and doing jigsaws. Our second session was spent sharing some of the stories we have been writing - stories about our childhood memories and life growing up in and around Bosham back in the day. Eventually we will print up these stories with photos in a booklet.

New members are welcome  for men  and women who are  about 60 plus, living independently in and around Bosham. It is a social club, a chance to make new friendships and enjoy some of the activities and outings.  Session cost £2, and this includes tea and cake, and the activities. It has been a busy time at the Monday Club. There have been  our usual menu of activities - outings, quizzes, crafts,  body and brain exercises,  race day and bingo. In addition we have been working on ‘our stories of life in  and around Bosham’.  There have been some really interesting histories - but we need to continue working on these.   ‘With Easter being early this year, as I write, there were only three sessions left of the Spring  Term, before we close for our Easter break. On one of these sessions we welcomed the Ukeleli Band, who played a range of well known songs, that we could sing along with. It was then out to lunch the following week, and our last session was a craft session, with some beautiful decoration of large wooden eggs, which we later varnished.

And so we move into summer. The club will open again on  Monday 15th April, and hopefully there will be sun shine and we can get out and about to enjoy the sea and the countryside.

We welcomed our members back to the Social Club on 8th January, after our Christmas break. It was an opportunity to meet up again with friends and catch up and chat, while playing board games, doing jigsaws, and having a cup of tea and some cake.

Our programme for activities this term will include our usual mix of music, quizzes, games and outings, plus a new venture  of sharing our memories of growing up in and around Bosham. The idea is to do this in writing, either in prose of poetry, and with pictures and photos, which we can then put together in a booklet of our shared past.

We know that many of our members have had really interesting lives and experiences.

Christmas is coming - and it seems to get earlier and earlier. At the Bosham Monday Club we had already started preparations in our November programme, with craft activities of Christmas card making and Christmas wreaths.  We also fitted in a lunch time visit to the Crown and Anquor at Dell Quay ( great view over the Harbour), a session of games and puzzles and a Christmas themed quiz.

In December we are blessed with invitations, first from the Bosham Manor House, where we have tea and carols, which includes a visiting choir from Oakwood school. Next we have lunch at the Millstream Hotel, where we are treated royally. Our final session for the year is a visit from the Havant Light Opera, when we are entertained with a very happy selection of music and song. We  are so grateful for all this support which is really valued by our members.  We then head off for our Christmas and New Year break.  We meet up again on Monday 8th January 2024.

Bosham Monday Club opened its doors again on the 11th September with a warm welcome back to our existing members and a special ‘hello’ to some new members. The autumn term started with our usual social time of tea, cake and chat, and then we were off to the Races - always a popular session.  Our remaining activities for September and October are:

One of the members of the Bosham Monday Club wrote this poem. She was inspired by the collage workshop we held. The workshop was part of the ‘Culture Spark Project’, funded by the CDC, which aims to give everyone in Chichester a chance to participate in cultural and artistic experiences. The workshops were linked to the Pallant House Art Gallery’s exhibition on Sussex landscapes, entitled ‘Chalk, Woodland and Water. The Monday Club was privileged to be part of this project and our work, along with the work of the other community groups involved was exhibited in Chichester and then at Petworth House.

After our Easter break, the club re-opened on Monday 17th April, and the summer programme includes our usual mix of quizzes, games, crafts, music, exercises and outings.

It has been lovely to welcome some new members over the past few months, from Bosham and the surrounding area. Our recent visit to the Woodmancote Pub for lunch was thoroughly enjoyed by all as was our own special version of Desert Island Discs. The photo below shows our desert props which got us in the mood for singing along to some old favourites.  The last meeting before Easter is on 27th March. This will be a craft activity with a Spring theme.

Bosham Monday Club starts back on Monday  17th April so there will be just two meetings in April, both at St. Nicholas Hall. On 24th April we will hold a short AGM for members of the club. Planning for the summer with monthly outings is well underway with some great activities coming up!

Spring is hopefully round the corner, as I write this, with early spring bulbs showing their faces.

February has been racing past with a lunch outing to the Woodmancote Pub on 27th February still to be enjoyed.
 It seems no time at all since we were up to our eyes in glue, creating collaborative collages. These will hopefully go on display in Petworth as part of a community project to link in with a pastoral theme (see pictures below).

Our outing this coming month will be to the Aldingbourne Country Centre on 20th March. This is a lovely opportunity to look round the shop, enjoy wonderful cakes and tea and then take a little stroll outside before the centre fully opens for the summer. We also have a fun Race Day planned in March and Easter Crafts, which will take place in St Nicholas Hall at our usual time.

On January 9th we kicked off the new year with conversation and a session of games and puzzles. Members enjoyed the thought of an outing to Manor Farm Nurseries for tea and cake later in the month as well as other events, including a craft session to create a collage, led by Sue O’Keefe and organised by Chichester Festival Theatre.

In February, we again have a full programme planned. Exercises for brain and body alike, and our very own version of Desert Island Discs with a bit of poetry thrown in, are all on the agenda. On the last session of the month (27th February), a lunch outing is planned so we hope that everyone will be able to come. As a new year beckons and we reflect on 2022, it has been so good to see so many Monday Club members attending regularly again. We have enjoyed a very festive December and enjoyed our delicious tea at the Manor House, where children from Oakwood School arrived to sing an abundance of carols and Christmas songs with infectious joy. Lunch at the Millstream Hotel and a visit from the Havant Light Opera in the lead up to Christmas, rounded off our year beautifully. A heartfelt thankyou to all those involved!

We start back on Monday 9th January with tea/coffee and cakes followed by board games. This is always a good chance to catch up with friends after a break. The following week, we welcome Shirley Sings and then on the 23rd we will be enjoying a craft activity. An outing is planned for the last Monday of the month (somewhere warm and dry). I don’t know if it just me, but time seems to be flying by, and as I write, the November programme of our activities at the Bosham Monday Club is almost done. But November has been good – we played a relaxed game of Bingo, we challenged ourselves with a few rounds of Countdown, we had tea and shopped at the Stanstead Garden Centre, and we made Christmas wreaths.

The making of the Christmas Wreaths will lead seamlessly into our pre- Christmas Programme. We are looking forward to tea and carols at the Manor House, with a children’s choir from Oakwood School coming along; to Christmas Lunch  at the Millstream Hotel; and finally to a visit from a group from the Havant Light Opera coming to provide some musical entertainment and to lead us in singing some Christmas songs.

Meanwhile the task for the Monday Club Team is to prepare the programme for the next term, starting on 9th January – 2023 – ALREADY!

The Bosham Monday SOCIAL Club came back into action in September after the summer break. Just to clarify for any new readers, the Club caters for older people living independently in the community in Bosham and the surrounding area. It offers an opportunity to get out, to socialise and build friendships. It meets on a Monday, 2 -4 pm at St Nicholas Hall, Brooks Lane, Bosham. The Monday Club charity also owns the Bosham minibus, which is run as a separate project, and is available to book by other community groups.

Club sessions this term so far have included board games, harvest crafts, body and brain exercises, singing, dancing and poetry, and two outings in October. One outing was to Southsea, where we enjoyed tea and cake in the Southsea Beach Café and could hear the waves and breathe the sea air.  Our second outing was to Bognor for a fish and chips lunch at the Waverley.

Looking forward, in November we have plans for more games, music and crafts, and then another outing. Then in December we move into our exciting pre- Christmas programme.

Our summer term came to an end in July with two outings. We were blessed by the weather (sunny but not too hot) and the tide (high tide in Bosham) when we went to the Bosham Sailing Club for tea, after which members could stroll around Old Bosham or gaze out across the beautiful sunlit harbour.

The following week we were guests at Oakwood School, having been invited to their Community Afternoon Tea. Another lovely day, waited on by some of their charming students and entertained by some others. For our last meeting, we were back in St Nicholas Hall, and embracing the summer with a demonstration of flower arranging, and one lucky winner in the raffle got to take home the demonstration flower arrangement.

We are closed now until September 12th, when we will start our autumn programme with some board games – a good way to get everyone chatting. June has been a busy and enjoyable month for the Social Club. The month was launched by a Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Party, with the hall decked out with bunting, flags, red, white and blue flowers, and a special tea with sandwiches and cakes. We had musical entertainment from ‘Shirley Sings’ who led us in singing songs from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Next was an outing to Brick Kiln, then a session of board games, followed by Race Day (always very popular) and finally a session of Body and Mind Exercises.

We have just three sessions left now in July, till we close for the summer, and we will be going to Old Bosham with tea at the Sailing Club, and then to Oakwood School Community Afternoon Tea – a special event. Our last session will be on July 18th. As volunteers, we now need a break and we will be open again on Monday September 12th.

The Bosham Monday Club has started up again after the Easter break. We have also held our AGM. We are a registered charity, and the BMC also runs and owns the Bosham minibus - two projects.  How did this come about? Back in the day - and the BMC has been running for over 50 years - a group of members of the Social Club liked to go around to entertain others - they were called the Old Timers (remember them) and to get around to their engagements they fund-raised for and bought the first Bosham minibus. The Old Timers, well, got old old, and stopped their travelling, and so the bus was gradually put to other uses. So as well as being available to the Social club, it is now used by other community groups in the village.

The Social Club continues to meet on a Monday afternoon, 2 - 4pm at St Nicholas Hall, and welcomes members from Bosham and the surrounding area. This term the programme will include outings, starting with a trip to Amberley, board games, musical entertainment, exercises, race day (always popular) and a celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The club is completely self funding, and the photo shows some examples of book marks, made and hand painted by one of our artistic club members, which were sold for 50p to go to the clubs funds. Many of our members have hidden talents!

We had a great start to the year! A new year quiz, gentle exercises with Jane, a lovely outing to Runcton garden centre (where the cakes were delicious and the staff looked after us very well!) and a fun time with race day.

In March we have a craft session planned, a visiting magician, an outing (for tea and cake) and we will be entertained by Havant Light Opera.

It has been so good to spend some special times together at the Monday Club this year after such a terrible 2020. On the last session before Christmas, we had a party at St Nicholas Hall - party food, tea, ( sherry!) singing and even pass the parcel!

 We were invited by Amanda to the Manor House in Bosham for afternoon tea the week before. What a treat! Amanda very kindly opened up her beautiful home to us and served a very delicious spread. We all left feeling very happy and full of Christmas spirit. Thank you Amanda!

In our craft session we decorated our own Christmas wreaths. We listened to Christmas music while we added bows, balls, holly and Ivy.

Bosham Monday Club had a busy five week month in November. We started off the first week with a new game for the club, Countdown! - Testing the brain cells whilst having fun!

The following week members chose from a selection of board games after their tea and cake and the week after, we were entertained by ‘Shirley Sings’ . Shirley sang a selection of songs that the members were familiar with and were able to join in with.

We did a bit of Christmas shopping at Stansted garden centre before enjoying tea and cake in the Pavilion.

The month ended with a singing, dancing and poetry session. There were some familiar songs, fun dance routines and interesting poems read by and some written by members.

Another great month of activities at the Bosham Monday Club! We started off with a member’s favourite - Race Day! What colour horse was going to win each race? And who is feeling lucky?

We got creative with glass the week after the races. Some glass vases were donated by Jan and we were inspired to decorate them using glass paint.

For our monthly outing, we had a lovely visit to the Aldingbourne centre in Norton, Chichester. The centre, which supports people with learning disabilities and/autism has a lot to offer for a fun day out. The rain came down on the day we visited but it didn’t stop us from having a nice cup of tea and a delicious selection of homemade cakes in the cafe all served by very friendly staff. We then had time to browse around the shop and buy some early Christmas gifts. We are hoping for better weather on our next visit there so that we can spend some outside in the maze or looking at the farm animals. See aldingbournetrust.org

Jane came along the week after to do chair exercises which help to strengthen arms and legs and improve balance. The exercises are always gentle and Jane makes them fun. Members joined in and then had a well earned cup of tea and home made cake.

Yay!!! Bosham Monday Club is back!!

After such a long break, it was great to get back to some sort of reality. We started off with bingo, which is always a lot of fun and Nathan our new volunteer did a brilliant job of calling the numbers! The following week we had lunch at the Bosham Inn. The service was good and the food was delicious!

Bosham Monday Club’s version of Countdown was our next activity which was very entertaining!

After a very long break due to covid restrictions, the Bosham Monday Club is back!!

It was lovely to all get together at Bosham Sailing Club for tea and cake in July and Hayling island in August for lunch, and we can now get back to a varied activity programme at St Nicholas Hall. Activities include crafts, bingo, guest speakers, quizzes, chair exercises, music, dancing and poetry to name but a few. Whatever the activity, we always have time to chat over tea and cake, and always have a laugh!

Bosham Monday Club finally meet!

It was a long time coming, but Bosham Monday Club members finally got to see each other again! After such a long break due to restrictions, we agreed that it was safe to meet up outside but undercover.

Our venue was Bosham Sailing Club, who very generously offered to let us use all their facilities. Tea, coffee, a selection of homemade cakes were served in addition to fresh scones with jam and cream. It was so good to see everyone together, really enjoying being out and about with good friends. The location was a big plus and the venue was perfect. Our thanks go out to the sailing club for enabling us to have such a lovely afternoon.

Following our very enjoyable tea at Bosham Sailing Club, we decided to all meet up again for lunch this month. The Bosham minibus picked up passengers from their homes while others travelled by car. The venue was Northney Farm tea rooms on Hayling Island. Our journey took us along the water for an interesting sea view and when we arrived, we were able to watch the cows and calves in the adjacent field.

The staff in the cafe were very kind, accommodating and efficient. There was a good lunch menu with generous portions and the food was delicious!

September sees the official return to the social club at St Nicholas Hall in Bosham with a full programme of activities and outings. If you would like to know more or would like to join us, please talk to Jan on 07710483718

With the re-opening of unrestricted Church services on 25 July, we will be re-starting the Church run in the Minibus from that date. Let Chris know (07771613989) if you need a lift.

We are looking forward to getting back to some sort of normality soon, but in the meantime we are keeping in touch with each other. Alice (pictured here) is just one of our Monday Club members who enjoyed receiving this months home delivery of strawberries, cream and home made shortbread biscuits! Alice wrote a lovely card to thank us. ‘So lovely to see your smiley faces today. Thank you so much for the lovely gift so beautifully presented. Thank you also for keeping in regular contact during lockdown. Your visits have meant so much to me. You are really and truly stars!’

Lockdown birthday

Noreen has celebrated her 90th birthday at home in lockdown! What a shame that we couldn’t all meet up at the Monday Club to celebrate with her. Instead, Monday Club made a surprise visit to deliver of a cup cake, teabag and a little gift.

With the vaccination roll out program, we are feeling a bit more optimistic about a return to our weekly meetings but only when we are sure that it’s safe. We will have so much to talk about when we all get together again! Stay safe everyone and keep smiling. Hopefully we will see you when we are out and about delivering again soon!!

Happy New Year!

Whilst 2021  hasn’t started that well with another lockdown situation, there is light at the end of the tunnel with the promise of the vaccine. So let’s all try to stay positive and look forward to returning to our social meetings hopefully in the spring!

Before Christmas, Amanda’s incredible generosity helped to keep spirits up by providing the wonderful hampers (as reported last month)
The children from Funtington Primary School also made and gave lovely Christmas cards to some of our members. These simple gestures of good will mean so much and really help people to stay strong in these difficult times. Thank you children!

Instead of delivering cake and tea this month, Jan, Jenny and Wendy either posted or delivered encouraging Happy New Year messages, a quiz and a chocolate treat!

Hopefully they’ll be out and about delivering again next month.

The volunteers at Bosham Village Friends remain ready to take those who cannot get about on their own to doctor and other appointments so are getting ready to take anyone who needs help to your Covid vaccination appointment.

If we have two or three at a similar time, we can use the Bosham Minibus.

It’s been a very sad year at the Bosham Monday Club (social). COVID 19 has meant that we haven’t been able to meet and sadly during this time, a number of our members have died including most recently, Beryl Cooper. Beryl had been attending the club since it was formed over 50 years ago! She organised the sales table and the raffle every week. She will be sadly missed along with the other members who are no longer with us.

Restrictions meant that we were not able to have our usual Christmas fun and festivities at the club this year but Jan, Jenny and Wendy were out and about delivering Christmas cheer to its members at home. Amanda Petigas was disappointed that she couldn’t invite us to the Manor House again this year for afternoon tea, so instead she very generously provided a wonderful feast of goodies for every member, including sausage rolls, mince pies and a bottle of bubbly!!

Also included in the treat for every member, was a cyclamen plant most kindly gifted by the flower ladies of Holy Trinity Church in Bosham.
Members were delighted, grateful and touched at the thoughtfulness and generosity shown to them. It was a lovely surprise and put a smile on their faces!

We look forward to starting up our social club meetings again hopefully in the spring.

Another month has gone by without our Monday Club meetings and there are lots of things that we are all missing. We are missing the fun and laughter that we have for two hours on a Monday afternoon. We are missing sipping tea and eating home made cake. We are missing the activities and trips out. But most of all we are missing each other! Sadly, the second lock meant that we (Jan, Jenny and Wendy) couldn’t even make a ‘tea and cake’ home delivery this month but we do hope to be able to deliver a Christmas treat! In the meantime keep smiling and let’s hope that Bosham Monday Club restarts early in 2021.

We have determined that we can still operate shopping trips in the Minibus during the current lock-down so will do so from next week. We will re-start the Tesco run on 13 November and run it every Thursday. Let Julie or Margaret know if you want to come!

We have established a protocol whereby a group of volunteers are prepared to takes users to appointments in their cars provided (a) both driver and user wear masks; (b) user sits in the back seat of a four door car; and (c) windows are open.

We also have a new WhatsApp group of volunteers where each request is posted to the group and the first volunteer who can do it posts a reply and contacts ther user to arrange a pick up time. This should prove a better system than the prior one of the phone holder ringing volunteers until he/she found someone who could do it, which made everyone feel guilty and probably missed the volunteer for whom that particular trip was convenient!

Bosham Monday Club was not able to meet again this month. The safety and well being of our members is very important to us and we don’t feel that the time is right to restart our Monday afternoon sessions. Obviously we miss everyone and our members miss each other as well as the activities and outings that are usually planned for every week. We are keeping in touch though. This months surprise delivery was a slice of victoria sandwich cake, a couple of tea bags, the answers to last months crossword, a sudoku and a Bosham Monday Club wordsearch!

Friday 31st July saw the first Tesco run and I’m pleased to say it all went very smoothly, granted it was only six ladies from Britannia Court but they all wore masks, used the hand sanitiser and sat on separate seats.  I’m pleased to say that Chris, Libbie and Don are happy to resume the Friday rota so, provided there is no change to the situation, Friday Tesco runs are back on.

Graham and Julie are resuming the monthly Chichester shopping trip on Monday morning 10th August but still no movement on the Church runs and it looks as though the Thursday Co-op run is still on hold (not sure how many passengers there will be for this one going forward).

We have to wait and see what’s going to happen with the Bishop Luffa school run and the Monday Club meetings.

Over the past few weeks the bus has gone to the doctors or hospital with the occasional passenger who have no alternative means of transport as we are able to observe the social distancing rule in the vehicle.

A hand sanitiser is now sitting in a pouch fastened to the shopping bag cage and a disinfectant spray is also on board for the driver to use after each trip.

From July 2020, the organisers of Bosham Village Friends (BVF) are Ian Hyde and Chris Hitchings and it will be part of the Bosham Monday Club Transport Committee, which runs the Monday Club Minibus. Ian is chairman and Chris, treasurer of the Transport Committee. They take over from Robin Dickeson, who took it on after the untimely death of Nick Langhorne.

BVF is for those who need transport for medical and related reasons, offering one phone number which can access a network of volunteers who would provide this in their own cars. It was set up in 2003 by Jan Emerson and Jennifer Fidler, who handed over to Nick in 2014. Nick ran this initially alongside Geraldine Turton and latterly on his own. At present, under social distancing, the BVF service cannot be provided and calls have stopped. As it happens, BISCuit has become the help centre for the elderly of the village and those who have asked BISCuit to help to get to doctor or hospital appointments have been passed to Ian and Chris, who have used the BMC Minibus, which can accommodate social distancing. This is likely to remain the case for a while.

When life is back to normal and BVF can operate again, Ian and Chris believe there is a discussion that could happen with BISCuit, which has created an admirable service for the residents of Bosham. Their volunteers and services would be welcome in BMC/BVF to help provide an enhanced offering which can be coordinated with the Minibus and the Bosham Monday Club to the benefit of all elderly and vulnerable in Bosham; and a tribute to Nick, who did a lot for our village and is much missed.

Sadly, the Monday Club were unable to meet again this month due to Covid-19. We are keeping in touch with each other on the phone, but it’s not quite the same when we’re not all together. We are missing our weekly Monday Club dose of fun and laughter! Jan, Jenny and Wendy however did deliver home made scones, strawberries and clotted cream (and  a couple of teabags) with a smile!

Birthday celebrations for Wyn -100 years old

One of our members, the lovely Wyn had her 100th birthday this month! We celebrated the event in true Bosham Monday Club party style - decorations, flowers, tea, cakes and a special birthday cake with candles (although we couldn’t fit 100 on!) ‘Shirley sings’ provided the entertainment by singing a good selection of popular upbeat songs including Happy Birthday.

The following week, our regular Race Day with the very entertaining Tony and Hazel was as fun as ever.

Our outing this month was a short trip to The Bosham Inn for a late lunch of fish and chips. The food was lovely and we were well looked after by the staff.

Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus socialising restrictions we were then not able to meet again.

To all of our lovely members out there, we are thinking of you and as soon as it is safe, we will be back up and running - with a welcome back party!! In the meantime, stay safe!! Love Jan, Jenny and Wendy

Given the risks of the current Coronavirus emergency to our target audience, we have decided to suspend both the Monday Club Social gatherings and the operations of the Minibus until further notice. The Bosham variety Show, scheduled for this weekend (14 March) has been postponed. We have tentatively booked 11 July at the Village Hall. 

Bosham Monday Club (Bosham’s social club for the over 60’s) has had another month of fun friendship and laughter and we have welcomed some new members to our friendly club!

We began with our own version of the team game Blockbusters which challenged the memory with some easy (and not so easy!) general knowledge questions.

Our craft session, scratch board carte a gratter, was fun and easy. We produced some colourful and beautiful pictures (see photo).

We were very grateful to Sarah Hughes, Community Wildlife Officer for Chichester District Council who took time out of her busy schedule to come to talk to us about wildlife in and around Bosham. It was a very informative talk, and it was refreshing to hear that certain wildlife like water vole are doing well in this area. We also got some good advice on how to attract wildlife to our gardens. Sarah explained that wildlife utilises corridors to travel between their habitats and that these corridors between Chichester harbour and the South Downs should be safeguarded thus allowing animals space to forage, feed and breed.

We had quite a lively session to finish off the month. Team skittles started it off and was a lot of fun. Then there was a selection of other games to play (or observe) like table tennis and badminton. For the less energetic there was always shove halfpenny!

Bosham Monday Club’s very own version of Blockbusters started the month off. Whilst challenging the brain cells, it was entertaining and brought laughter to the afternoon. A variety of board games such as cards, dominoes and cribbage were available for selection to play the following week. It is always fun to play games whilst chatting.

Our outing this month was very much enjoyed and members have requested a revisit. It was to Manor Farm Gardens Centre in Runcton. The staff at the Palm House Restaurant there were charming and provided a wonderful selection of delicious cakes.

We ended the month with a visit from Nichola who now comes regularly to do chair exercises. She was once again impressed by our enthusiasm, improved ability and fitness. Very simple, slow moves can improve our mobility and we have benefited by her visits.

The Bosham Monday Club started up again on Monday 6th January after our Christmas break. It was good to meet up with friends and the first hour of our session was spent catching up with everyone with their Christmas stories, over a hot cup of tea and some cake.

Top of the chat was sharing our memories of the lovely Christmas lunch we all enjoyed at the Millstream Hotel. We were privileged to have been invited once again by the Millstream management who treat us like royalty with a welcome drink, a three course lunch, followed by coffee and mince pies. We love going there and are very appreciative of their generosity. We try to show this by collecting for a tip for the staff who look after us.

Our pre-Christmas programme ended with a festive Race Day with Tony and Hazel – Tony dressed in full jockey silks and instead of horses racing he had reindeer. Race Day is always good fun.

It was such a treat for Bosham Monday Club to be invited to tea at the Manor a house in Bosham. As we arrived, Amanda gave us a very warm welcome into her lovely home. The house was beautifully decorated for Christmas with a big Christmas tree, wreaths, garlands and twinkling lights. As we sat by the glowing log fires, we chatted and listened to Christmas songs. Cups of tea were served with cucumber sandwiches, delicious mince pies with brandy cream and cakes. It was such a special afternoon! 

Amanda’s kindness and hospitality was greatly appreciated and the day left us feeling very happy and full of Christmas cheer. Our thanks go to Amanda and Franck Petigas for opening up their home to us.

Other activities this month were seated yoga with Hayley, entertainment from ‘Shirley sings’, a Christmas cracker craft session and a shopping trip with afternoon tea at Dobbies in Havant.
